Well said, Michael Blair. As an educated older American-born in 1953, I've had thoughts along the same lines, but not taken the time to set them down as eloquently as you have here.
Most profoundly-how is it that people who have enjoyed the bounty-some writers call us the "lucky billion" that western democracy has provided up to now, can be so quick to turn their backs on it. It literally boggles the mind when you think about it. Our ancestors fought wars to preserve a way of life that had been carefully crafted to maximize individual liberty and promote capitalism. And now, we just give it away. And for what? Largely a lesser life. Marking the first time in the west politicians have actively promoted the notion that we in the west must tighten our belts-no they rarely come out and say this, although its not unheard of, but rather use the apparatus of the deep state bureaucracies to implement them on the sly, once they are in office. The pandemic and the "climate change" narrative have been the empowering agents for this sharp turn in the last five-ten years. The rolling crises that never dissipates and as Orwell imagined keeps the population in a state of unrest, seeking safety. The other thing I would add is the DEI trend where individualism and excellence are diminished in favor of averaging down, and taking from those who produce and redistributing wealth through onerous taxation that stifles capitalism. I don't know about Canada, but in America, the education system has been completely taken over by Marxists, intent only on turning out DEI robots. You can see the results on our streets. Thanks for a thought-provoking essay this morning.
Canada is not much behind the US, more like less progressive states than Cali or NY. The Liberals are closely linked to the Dems in the US, even using the same slides for some presentations and received big help from US operatives in Trudeau's initial election for PM. One of the first things done once elected (maybe not related) was a large donation to Hillary's fund by the Govt of Canada.
The only hate speech allowed in Canada is against Conservatives, white men and Christians, dont even think about a negative comment regarding anything, any group, or anyone else.
PS: More recently hate speech of Israel is also allowed...
I don't disagree about some of the missteps with Climate Change etc. You're wrong about Trudeau. We don't actually like him that much any more. All of that notwithstanding DJT is a clear and present (and future) danger to wellbeing both in the USA and abroad. I'm not arguing against conservative policies, some of which have merit, I'm opposed to HIM. Pick a better candidate, if you can find one.
I read 84 and animal farm around the age of 13, had a big impact, I should read them both again... Orwell, almost killed in the Spanish civil war, what an impact he has had on the world.
Terry Fitzgerald What is wrong with Canadian and American democracies? If Trump gets re-elected I am not optimistic about the outcome. Ultra right wing politics is not an antidote for whatever people think is wrong with the "leftists" albeit there is much needed improvement. If he wins half of America will have supported the ascension of a dictator who will make life miserable for almost everyone including them. WTF is wrong with America. The Germans Loved Hitler until he showed them why they shouldn't have. History repeats itself until the people pay attention. As stated "A people always gets the government they deserve"
There is nothing "ultra right wing" about Trump's policies. Lower taxes, less immigration, a stronger energy industry, more domestic manufacturing are not "ultra right wing" but more or less centrist and lead to a stronger economy.
The real risks are the radical left. Trump might dream of becoming a dictator but the U.S. checks and balances actually work most of the time and he is approaching 80 and won't be around for more than another ten or twenty years if he is lucky. The recent assassination attempt shows how vulnerable Trump really is.
You are right about Hitler. The parallels are closer with Keir Starmer and Justin Trudeau than with Trump. Half of Americans despise Trump while the majority of Brits embraced the Starmer Labour government and in 2015 a clear majority of Canadians had a love affair with Justin Trudeau.
If he gets elected the rhetoric will just go back to 100+%, no one in the media including Hollywood or in the Government wants him. Likely the deep state will take another shot at him. The populism that you complain about of course is just getting a handle on education, immigration and the military industrial complex. Other parts of Govt need to be constrained as well starting with the CIA. FBI and justice department. The recent Chevron decision may help, but I doubt it.
My concern has more to do with the current outright theft of billions in the name of climate change and for other groups that are controlling or rewarded by the current politicians.. The debt will be taken care of by inflation which hurts everyone not getting the money first, eg helicopter money with the helicopter sitting over their back yards...
From everything Ive seen the Dems are much much closer to H than Trump, we dont even know who the President is, not just today, but for the last 3+ years, the guy obviously brain dead, tiny scripted appearances, under reported(even when he has been jacked up) or shots of his doubles from a distance.
Who is running the show and what is their goal?
You dont have to worry about Trump, all those registered border crossers will vote, they are registered at the border and the voting machines will ensure they do....

Well done sir. Providing the actual facts makes this pretty scary.

Scary isn’t it.
