Grocery is a tough business, lots of competition and low margins, usually quite happy with 2-4% profits. I recall about 20 odd years ago, credit cards being accepted by Grocery stores, prior to that they were not, I dont recall the reason for the change, but much like few retailers ever give a discount for cash the credit card cost of approx 3% adds directly to the cost of groceries.
FWIW I often find prices at a grocery store for merchandise much lower than eg Canadian Tire, only because the Groceries stores use much lower margins on selling product., often single digits and even loss leaders. Corn yesterday being sold for $0.13 a cob or a 12 pound watermelons for $2.88 near me, likely dont cover the cost..
