Drugs and mental illness is a problem, often related, but today you can’t put a person if they don’t agree in a mental institution. Europe has had some success using a carrot and stick policy, if you want some free stuff, you need to do something, eg apply for jobs, go to drug rehab etc etc.. human nature, my sister didn’t like getting up early and going to work, she was able to get a nice apartment and monthly payments. Today, 48 years later, she never worked, why would she, her market value would be $2500 in downtown Toronto, she pays $126.
Where I currently reside, Kingston, ont there is a homeless problem, I can’t get a doctor but a van goes to their camp with doctors. Kingston spending $40k per homeless person, I like to say build it and they will come. When I was younger, hitchhiking around the world I was homeless but then you knew to stay out of sight. Once in Miami, sleeping in a friends car they put me in Dade county state pen, I hadn’t eaten in a couple days, but I wouldn’t touch the crap they gave me. I would likely be homeless today when the weather is good if I was much younger.
Mostly agree, for sure the major reason for high prices is govt policies and taxes. I was looking at a modest home in Toronto a couple months back, $90k, but just the land transfer tax was $45k, and new houses also have hst. Btw the bigger carbon tax on April 1 didn’t touch Quebec since Justin exempted them. I bet they still get the rebate..
Thanks for your frankness. Boomers have lived long enough to have experienced some similar situations close to our families
I don’t know where to draw the line between choice and mental illness used as an excuse .

Michael Shellenberger author of San Fran-sicko skewers progressives for the mishandling of America’s faltering cities. A Review :
Progressives claimed they knew how to solve homelessness, inequality, and crime. But in cities they control, progressives made those problems worse.
Michael Shellenberger has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for thirty years. During that time, he advocated for the decriminalization of drugs, affordable housing, and alternatives to jail and prison. But as homeless encampments spread, and overdose deaths skyrocketed, Shellenberger decided to take a closer look at the problem.
What he discovered shocked him. The problems had grown worse not despite but because of progressive policies”
Elon Musk Tweet :
“You could literally film a Walking Dead episode unedited in downtown SF.
This is where San Francisco politics leads and Twitter was exporting this self-destructive mind virus to the world.
With some exceptions, other tech companies are still doing so.
Evil in guise of good.”
A very 'common sense' article. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Does anyone know if Michael has written his auto-biography and where can i buy a copy.
Thanks, Robert
