"Woke" media practice their own form of "racism"
North American society suffers from the tyranny of the minority
Listening to Kamala Harris November 4, 2020 speech talking about the need for not only “equality” but also “equity” made me gag. In her world, equity is only achieved if the victims of what she sees as oppression are made whole plus a bit to reflect their history of oppression. As she said it:
“So, there’s a big difference between equality and equity. Equality suggests, “Oh, everyone should get the same amount.” The problem with that: Not everybody’s starting out from the same place. So, if we’re all getting the same amount, but you started out back there and I started out over here, we could get the same amount, but you’re still going to be that far back behind me. It’s about giving people the resources and the support they need so that everyone can be on equal footing, and then compete on equal footing. Equitable treatment means we all end up at the same place.”
For a moment she had me. I had always wanted to be a basketball star in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and could never understand why scouts for the league hadn’t recruited me. Sure, I am only 5’ 7”, over 70 years old, and a bit overweight, and I had as much chance as anyone to try out for the league, but in reality I am not starting out from the same place as 6’ 6” black kids who have been spending their lives on the basketball court since they could walk. What I lacked was the “resources and support” I needed to be on an “equal footing”. I concluded I was oppressed by the racist tyranny of the NBA whose preference for talented black athletes who can actually play basketball is patent. Just how many short, fat white guys do you see in the NBA? An overwhelming percentage of NBA players are young and black. This is ageism and racism at its worst in Harris’ world.
Sound silly? The Liberal left has adopted silly ideas and makes silly statements. Mainstream Media (MSM) pile on to it. A friend of mine took the time to send me statistics they had compiled. While I haven’t fact checked them, I believe they are reasonably accurate.
According to my friend, there are 328 million Americans and 72% of them are white. But white men have pretty well disappeared from advertising on MSM. Based on data he says comprised a review of a 4-month period, the very few white men who appear in commercials are either old, ugly, sick or the partner of a black woman and have no speaking part in the advertisement. There were no commercials of white fathers and sons. Most of the couples were interracial. He advised me that while the African American demographic comprises 13% of the population, they appear in 94% of the commercials.
Spend a few minutes watching CNN, MSNBC, CBS or Fox (if you can’t stomach doing so) and you will immediately notice these MSM have embraced “diversity” to the extent that visible minorities make up a disproportionate percentage of anchors, commentators and guests. Add CBC to that list because it suffers from the same disease.
I don’t mind the fact that blacks dominate the NBA or that visible minorities make up a disproportionate number of the people who we see reporting news and commenting on world events. Most of the ones I watch are talented and well-informed. What is galling, however, is listening to them rant about “racism” when they may be its beneficiary to the extent it exists. I like to think they were chosen because of their skills, knowledge and competence, and I am sure many were.
I am an old, white man who’s family came to Canada long before Confederation, and I am proud of it. I love it that in Canada (at least until recently) our country welcomed people from all parts of the globe and within a decade or two they were indistinguishable from other Canadians, having become “Canadian” in every aspect but birth. But it makes me sick to my stomach to listen to Justin Trudeau and his ilk describe Canada as a “systemically racist” country and pretend that Canadians are at each others’ throats because of skin colour. It is not only untrue, it is disgraceful to suggest and cannot contribute anything to keeping Canada as the best place on Earth to live and raise a family.
