The United States is an unreliable ally
The 1994 agreement guaranteeing independence for the Ukraine seems laughable today
On December 5, 1994 the United States (among others) entered into an Agreement (the “Security Agreement”) to guarantee the security and independence of the Ukraine in return for that country’s nuclear disarmament. A copy of that Agreement is linked herein. It is signed on behalf of the United States by Bill Clinton.
Today’s U.S. President, Joe Biden, has made speeches denouncing the Russian invasion of the Ukraine and imposing sanctions. In the meantime, Russian soldiers have invaded the Ukraine and and bent on toppling its government and removing its leaders. Russia was also a party to the agreement guaranteeing the security and independence of the Ukraine but the other parties (other than the Ukraine) seem unwilling to enforce its terms.
American leaders have been attempting to persuade Iran to enter into an agreement not to proceed to develop nuclear weapons. The Iranians can watch CNN to see just how little value an agreement with the United States has, as Ukranians are killed, bombed, burned and driven from their homes by Russia and the best the Americans can do is bitch and impose “sanctions”. Before the Security Agreement was signed, Ukraine had a massive stockpile of nuclear weapons.
I am confident Ukranians would prefer they had kept the nuclear arsenal today, which would very likely have been enough to actually ensure their security. Hollow words from a series of Democrat Presidents hasn’t proved to offer any protection.
I see no coverage of the Security Agreement on American television news, just footage of Joe Biden talking tough but clearly unwilling to step up and stand firm against the Russian invasion of a country where America formally agreed to ensure its security. Under Biden, America is an unreliable ally.
The disgraceful lack of substance evident in the current response by Joe Biden to the Russian invasion of Ukraine will almost certainly be a barrier to Iran or any other country agreeing to abandon or cease development of its own nuclear weapons. This is just another foreign policy failure of the Biden administration, hot on the heels of its bungled withdrawal from Afghanistan. Why any member of NATO would conclude they can count on the United States (when Russia inevitably continues on its path of territorial expansion) defies reason.
It has been many decades since a world war and three generations of Canadians believe there will never be another one. They live in a fool’s paradise. Unless a country is willing to defend is freedoms at the point of a gun when that is needed, they have already lost their freedom and the loss will become evident over time. Russia wants to rebuild the Soviet Union; China wants to assimilate Hong Kong and Taiwan; and, western democracies led by the United States have become impotent to intervene. Worse, their leaders (including Biden, Trudeau, Macron, and Johnson) are wont to intrude on the freedom’s of their own citizens under the pretense that restrictions on freedom are needed to protect public health and “fight climate change”. They look weak, inept and vulnerable to Putin and Xi.
Canadians and Americans need to act to defend first their freedoms and then their borders by ousting the “woke” leaders now in Ottawa and Washington and committing themselves to dismantling oppressive laws and rebuilding a viable military in the case of Canada.
This week, the Earth became a more dangerous place.
The election in the US this fall, at this point in time, looks like the house will change and perhaps the sennet as well. that will put a leash on Biden. We, in Canada, have to wait for an undetermined length of time to get rid of our headache. The advent of the PPC has made the situation a little more difficult.
