Strategy, not stupidity, explains the toxic policies of leftist governments in Canada and United States
Building their dream of a socialist state requires destruction of the current one
The strategy being used by the Democrats in U.S.A. and in Canada by Trudeau is not accidental, its purpose is to damage society so much voters demand change and look to government for solutions. Personal effort, success based on knowledge and competence, free markets, free speech, and an informed electorate are barriers, not objectives.
Neither Biden nor Trudeau is bright enough to have conceived of the strategy. They didn’t have to. It was the work of two leftist sociologists at Colombia University - Cloward and Pivens - who published the strategy in 1966. The elements of the strategy are simple:
Fred Elbel, writing for the Concerned Americans for the Independent Republic and Constitution (CAIRCO) described the strategy succinctly.
Unbridled immigration, massive increases in government and government debt, and barriers to individual success are now part of the American nightmare under Democratic Governors, Mayors and of course the Administration. The intent is deliberate - make Americans more dependent on a government that cannot afford to support them, overwhelming support programs such as entitlements, welfare and health care to deepen divisions and compel citizens to seek a national Democratic socialist state that provides guaranteed annual income for all, eliminating poverty.
That is what is happening in United States under Biden and will happen in Canada under Trudeau if allowed to continue. The end goal is outright socialism, where all power over the means of production and distribution is in the hands of a central government. It will meet its objective of “wiping out poverty” by making all citizens impoverished and, since poverty is a relative term, no one will be labelled as impoverished.
Like all ideas concocted by sociologists, particularly leftist sociologists (is there any other kind?), the strategy ignores where the wealth they desire to redistribute comes from and their strategies will ensure little wealth is created. Innovation dies in government hands, corruption flourishes, and freedom is stifled to protect the regime.
The outcry over Putin’s treatment of Navaldy who recently died in prison comes from both sides of the political aisle, but that sort of treatment of dissident voices is in our future if the leftist dream comes true.
In America, Trump may be the best hope to stem the crimson tide to a socialist order, and in Canada the best hope is certainly Pierre Poilievre. Those who dream that you can take money from those who have earned it and give it to those who have not while still benefitting from the incentive that the free market capitalist system provides to those willing to risk all to innovate, build, and create new businesses are truly dreaming. This toxic trend must end.
Think about it in November in United States and in 2025 in Canada.
Michael, I enjoy reading your missives. I agree with many, disagree when you go off on an extreme tangent. C-P story is no more than an anecdote and only mildly interesting. Young, intellectually agitated people love revolutionary ideas; they always will. Then, they start real-life and the ideas die. This is as far as C-P "strategy" travelled. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/10/nyregion/frances-fox-piven-democratic-socialism.html
I'm of your age bracket (71). I escaped Polish communism forty years ago and so I'm biased. Since Mulroney's days I voted PC or Reform.
I'm also a pragmatic. I know a lot about Europe and often find useful to compare and reflect on how social-democratic ideas work in practice. Americans are highly focused on creating material wealth with a religious-like zest. Europeans redistribute higher portion of their wealth for social-equality aka social-peace and values within commons eg. culture, healthcare (Gini coefficient illustrates this well https://ourworldindata.org/what-is-the-gini-coefficient). Both live very good lives. In my pragmatic test as to who’s “better off” I observe that, today, it is mostly a matter of individual preferences and circumstances (geo-politics such as US/Mexico border and war in Syria or Ukraine do meddle here).
I admire your prolific writing.
Best regards, Marek
Agree . And the other best hope is Elon Musk . Because there is no news , only propaganda. X is the only hope for free speech . So the Cloward-Piven strategy will try to take down these guys through kangaroo courts and / or financial ruin
