Climate alarms have captured the minds of poltical leaders across the globe. Why?
Millions of people share a common belief. They are backed by intellectuals who claim to have deep understanding of the issues facing mankind. The intellectuals have published erudite papers reviewed and adopted by their peers. Their papers are collected and published in comprehensive outpourings of their writings. They are concerned that humanity may suffer if the issues they see are not dealt with. They have prescriptive remedies and are intolerant of any dissent from their closely held beliefs. Many of them occupy positions of great status and power in society. They are willing to punish those who contradict them and believe they are doing God’s work. They are indifferent to who gets hurt and are inspired by the highest motives. They have used their power mercilessly to save mankind from the catastrophes they foresee if their beliefs are ignored. Are they conspirators?
You decide.
Of course I am not referring to the climate change cult but to the Church. The intellectuals are the Pope and the Bishops and ArchBishops of the Catholic Church. The Bible (in its many versions) comprise the comprehensive outpouring of their writings, accepted by millions as the Gospel and the word of God. Throughout history they have tortured and vilified people who disagreed with them, and urged kings and soldiers to invade countries where their beliefs were denied and inflict grievous harm on the people living in those countries because they sincerely believed that if their “deniers” didn’t recant they would be denied entry into heaven.
I don’t mean to pick on the Catholic Church. Radical Islam has the same characteristics, ordering jihads which attack infidels as warranted by their beliefs. Ancient Aztecs and Incas believed sacrifice of children would change the weather and left behind archeological evidence of the violence they visited on their own children based on their beliefs. History is rife with “movements” that culminated in religious zeal or something akin to it. Jimmy Jones, Hare Krishna, the great Dutch tulip mania and the South Sea Bubble. Millions of believers and adherents is not proof of anything other than mankind’s propensity to become deluded.
Climate change is no different. It has become a religious belief. Leave aside the inescapable fact that the theory that CO2 causes climate change is not just absurd but also inconsistent with even a grade school application of the laws of physics. In an earlier article I set out the arithmetic showing that a doubling of CO2 levels could not materially affect atmospheric temperatures. Nothing extreme, just grade four arithmetic applied to grade 11 chemistry and physics.
I challenge readers to read that article and challenge anyone who reads it to find a hole in the application of the laws of physics to this issue and to post as a reply to the article their opposing view. I welcome dissent and dialogue. But Gore, Biden, Trudeau, McKenna, Wilkinson, May, Hayhoe, Michael Mann, Gerald Kutney, and a host of other “elites” don’t want a dialogue. Likely this is because they have political capital invested in this climate charade and it is dangerous for them to admit they are wrong. Dead wrong.
I often hear that “the majority of scientists support the theory” that CO2 causes climate change. Not only is that nonsense, but also it is irrelevant. Only one scientist needs to be correct to disabuse society of any theory. If a theory predicts an outcome and the outcome fails to materialize, the theory is wrong. Full stop.
There is a better explanation for this movement. It began with the Club of Rome in the 1960’s - a group of elites that thought the world’s population was growing out of control and that capitalism was harmful and conceived of using climate alarms to rally support for a post-national global socialist government. The membership of that group has changed over time, but the rhetoric has just grown more strident. Al Gore, the late Pierre Trudeau, his son Justin Trudeau, John Kerry, Jonathan Wilkinson, Catherine McKenna, Klaus Schwab, Bill Gates and many others have an annual meeting in Davos called the World Economic Forum where they discuss the “Great Reset” and chortle about their good fortune that the COVID pandemic arose giving them another global crisis they could claim could only be solved by a global response.
At least some of the members of the climate movement have had the grace to admit the motivation for the alarm has nothing to do with climate. The late Christine Stewart, former Canadian Minister of Environment, was quoted in the Calgary Herald “No matter if the science of global warming is all phony.. climate change provides the greatest opportunity to bring about justice and equality in the world".
Timothy Wirth, while President of the U.N. Foundation, echoed a similar sentiment: “We've got to ride this global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing in terms of economic and environmental policy”.
Ottmar Endenhofer, co-chair of working group 3 of the IPCC, was equally forthcoming.
Endenhofer reminds me of an observation that zealots typically look like zealots. All he needs is an inverted collar and a black outfit and he would fit right in as the high priest of a religion. A bit like Steven Guilbeault, a Canadian cabinet minister and self-described “environmental activist”.
This climate movement is as or more dangerous than radical Islam today or Catholicism in the mid-centuries. Luckily, the promoters are largely leaders of democratic countries and we can throw them out. Has anyone seen the leaders of China or Russia promoting the climate scare or are the tyrants of the Eastern world using fossil fuels hand over fist while western democracies self-immolate on the altar of “climate”? In the meantime, our elected leaders doing “God’s work” have created a global energy shortage that will impair the lives of millions of ordinary citizens, drive continuing inflation and impoverish many.
We need to toss them out.
Again you clarify the unclear ... thanks
