To really understand the impact of inflation, the year over year rate is of little value since what really matters is the cost of living now versus the last time you got a raise. It is worth looking at a few sectors, starting with fast food, and a timeframe that begins when Trudeau took office in 2015. Here’s a chart. Notice that the reported rise in prices since 2014 is 31%. Then ask yourself why you can’t buy a burger and fries at the prices you paid in 2015 plus 31%.
The U.S. isn’t much better. Since Biden took office the rise in prices of ordinary household items is breathtaking. Orange juice, sugar, cooking oil, beef, bread, eggs, milk, cereal and butter comprise the staples in virtually every households food budget.
In reality, North American governments don’t want inflation to end since it is the only factor that brings down the debt to GDP ratio while Biden and Trudeau keep up the pace of their reckless spending. Inflation is simply a tax on the poorest in society.
Trudeau and Biden would like the next election to be about “climate change” or “abortion rights” or some other distracting nonsense that is either based on pseudoscience (in the case of climate change) or affects very few people despite its emotional appeal to voters. Reality is that voters now think inflation is the most serious issue they face and they are right.
Bidenomics and Trudeau economics are responsible for the inflation we are experiencing. Massive debt, massive deficits, uncontrolled immigration in advance of adequate housing, school capacity or health care infrastructure, have made all elements of the cost of living rise and in Canada the useless carbon tax just adds to the problem.
Think about it next election. You get what you vote for.
Debt level in US is far below of Japan or some EU countries. If inflation declines there will be possibility to reduce interest rates and interest payments. So in the long run US should be OK.
Also - debasement of currencies is a habit of all countries in all times irrespective of governance form. Even gold coins were affected. So I would say it is endemic to human nature rather than political flavor (though left governments are more prone to it).
