Artificial intelligence lacks something
AI lacks intelligence when limited by left wing ideology
The buzz over ChatGPT, a brainchild of open AI (a research lab that claims its mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity), has been enormous. Former Harvard President Larry Summers lauded it on Wall Street Week; Hoover Institute “Goodfellows” commented on it in a recent episode, and I gave it a try.
I was immediately impressed with its speed of response and found it answered some complex questions correctly dealing with the application of laws of physics. I found my initial enthusiasm tempered by responses from ChatGPT that refused questions regarding the physics of “climate change” and instead offered a left wing narrative promoting the specious Anthropogenic Global Warming (“AGW”) theory that left wing politicians and the United Nations advance as a basis for less freedom and more international socialism.
But the concept was nonetheless intriguing. Imagine Google with the ability not only to return articles and links but also the ability to apply logic and principles of math, physics and chemistry to search queries.
One fascinating comment made on Goodfellows episode was that ChatGPT could pass the bar examination (the key step in becoming a lawyer) yet scored below average on a standard IQ test. That didn’t surprise me at all. Law schools teach aspiring lawyers that the correct interpretation of a statute is the interpretation that benefits their client and not the intention of the legislative body that enacted the law, and the law students accept that and apply it in their law careers in practice.
I asked ChatGPT to calculate the amount of energy “trapped” by so-called “Greenhouse Gases (GHG’s)” in the Earth’s atmosphere expressed in watts per meter squared of earth’s surface and was excited to see it returned the correct answers - 240 watts per meter squared.
The response replicated below was that the greenhouse . . .
I asked the obvious follow up question, based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that inter alia claim that a doubling of CO2 concentrations would increase the amount of energy “trapped” by CO2 by approximately 3.77 watts per square meter of Earth’s surface, so I rounded that up to 4 watts per square meter and asked my follow up question:
Rather than give a straight answer, ChatGPT gave an arm-waving answer saying it is “difficult to predict” and the surface temperature of the Earth is “affected by many factors”. Why is that a non-answer? Because AGW theory claims an increase in “global average temperature” which eliminates local changes from consideration and other than the amount of energy coming from the sun and allegedly being “trapped” all other considerations are in common. ChatGPT could accurate calculate 240 watts per square meter as the amount of energy “trapped” by the “greenhouse affect” that results in Earth’s surface temperature of about 15 deg. C but could not multiply that by 244/240 - all that was required since temperature is a linear function of energy supplied, a simple application of the laws of thermodynamics and the property of air that has a specific heat capacity of 1,004 joules per kilogram (a constant).
The answer 244/240 x 15 = 15.25 deg. C, an increase of 0.3 deg. C. Even the IPCC admits that increases in CO2 concentration have a logarithmic relationship to surface temperature with every doubling of CO2 adding the same quantum of temperature - a property called the “climate sensitivity” to increased CO2. The problem for AGW advocates is that IPCC claims “climate sensitivity” is between 2 and 5 deg. C for each doubling of CO2 when nothing more complex than grade 4 arithmetic shows it is approximately 0.3 deg. C and rising CO2 levels from the current 420 ppm by volume of atmosphere would increase global temperatures by not more than 1.2 deg. C if CO2 levels rose to 6,740 ppm by volume (that is, doubled four times in sequence).
The Twitter Files being released by Elon Musk show us how left wing ideologues used the power of Twitter to interfere with American elections to ensure a Democrat was elected and suppress conservative voices. What is clear to me is that the Silicon Valley elites who have developed ChatGPT want to ensure access to AI does not impair the advancement of leftist ideology or interfere with the AGW narrative.
Too late, it already has, as demonstrated herein.
You could be onto something here, but the proper way to do the calculation is to use 288k instead of 15c.
Good on you for showing this to everyone to make intelligent choices.
